A musical video where the artist, Angel Haze, sings a holiday-themed song that discusses the impact of colorism on black communities. The title of this blog post is "Flavour Black Is Beautiful Instrumental Christmasxmass." Colourism is described as “a form of discrimination against individuals with darker skinned complexions” or “prejudice or discrimination against people with dark skin.” The content in the article will provide information on colourism and representations of it through media. This blog post will focus more on how colourism can be used to discriminate against black people, specifically during the holidays when people are looking for inspirational songs to listen to. Colourism is the discrimination against darker-skinned people, especially black people. Colourism can be described as “prejudice or discrimination against individuals with dark skin.” Representatives often show hatred towards dark-skinned people by either wanting to date them or just being interested in them. This includes things such as calling darker-skinned girls “ugly”, using terms like ‘pretty, pretty please’ to show brown skinned girls love and making fun of darker skinned girls for being too good at sports or school work because it is not seen as important for dark skinned women. This also factors in when choosing who you would like to date. For example, if a person is not attracted to someone because of the fact they have a darker complexion, it is seen as a desirable trait. Darker-skinned men are subconsciously told that they can be “succeed” at school and in the work force, where as lighter-skinned men are told that they can’t. This leads to darker skinned women being picked last in dating situations. A case where this happens is when a girl feels “ugly” because of her dark skin and she feels like she can’t date or be with anyone young. Representations of colourism often take place in television programs and movies. One example of an episode that shows the impact of colourism is in “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” when Aunt Vivian buys a lighter-skinned man some hair products because she thinks the hair products will make him more attractive. In music as well as other forms of media, there are many representations of colourism. These representations include things such as dark skin being seen as undesirable or “ugly” and having a negative impact on the way a person looks. Other representations include darker skin being seen as more successful and thus better than lighter skin. Looking through different media helps show the perceptions people have towards darker skinned women, due to these representations dominating many areas of life today. An episode of "The Wendy Williams Show" is when Wendy Williams stated that certain holidays were for lighter skinned people. It is implied in this episode that certain holidays are only for lighter skinned people because the holidays are predominately geared towards them. Another example would be in the movie "Girls Trip" when Dina mentions she has never seen snow before and then Sandy comes up with "Blizzard Babies" as a result, which meant dark-skinned babies born in the winter time. While this was just said in jest, it still shows how colourism can play a role in media and it can be used to discriminate against black girls.
